How do I build my life on a solid foundation of God? In Luke 6:46-49, Jesus tells us very simply how to do it.
"Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." – Luke 6:46-49.
Jesus sheds light on the hypocrisy of calling Him "Lord" but not really following Him. Thankfully, He also gives us three steps to truly making Him the Lord of our lives:
- Come to Him.
- Listen to Him.
- Obey Him.
He says that if we do these three things we build our lives on a firm, unshakable foundation, like a house built on solid rock. When we do, He promises that the storms that come will not tear us apart. Life can often be terribly difficult, but He promises us Himself to get us through it.
For me, the most difficult step listed here is obeying Him. I come to Jesus pretty regularly, and have even become better at hear what He has to say. But obeying Him sometimes feels too hard, too foolish or just plain impossible.
This is my prayer for 2009…that I would come to Him, listen to Him and do what He tells me to do. It is my prayer for you as well.
