Are you a worrier? Do you worry about health or finances or your spouse or your kids or your job? Do you worry about worrying?
Sometimes I’m a worrier. As a kid I worried whether my friends would like me, I worried about getting good grades, I worried about things at home. Even as a young adult I was a worrier.
What do I worry about now?
- Michele – How can I possibly be the kind of husband I need to be?
- Our kids – Will they really grow know and reflect their Savior’s love?
- Work – How could I ever really help Pastor anyone?
- Time – I’m usually convinced there is not enough of it!
- Grades – Even though I know that no one cares, I’m still compelled to get A’s in seminary.
It wasn’t until I was confronted with the words of Jesus that I truly began to believe that I should worry about being worried. What did Jesus say about worry?
Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? – Luke 12:22-26
Pretty simple really…but I was struck to the core with it a few mornings ago. I believe Scripture is clear that we should be prudent, but not worry. We should work very hard at what we do, but not worry. We should be careful, but not worry. We should plan well, but not worry.
I don’t know what you worry about, but Jesus went on to give one of the antidotes to worry:
“And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.
“So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom.” – Luke 12:29-32
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else. Believe…really believe! Put God first. First in your marriage. First in your family. First at work and at school. If you seek Him out before EVERYTHING else, He will give you everything you need. Guaranteed. No worries. He is happy to do it!
