Knock and Wait

Knock and WaitIf you’ve got kids, you’ve undoubtedly said something like this: “Answer me when I’m talking to you”.  It is frustrating to talk to someone that doesn’t respond.  It is especially frustrating when you know they hear you, but are too preoccupied to respond.  It is even more frustrating when they do hear you, but are too lazy to respond.

Man, I’m getting frustrated just writing this!

Have you ever thought how patient God is with us?  Think of all the times we fail to respond to God’s call to be with us.  The readings from day 6 in the Outflow book talk about Jesus’ patience.

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. – Revelation 3:20.

Jesus is patient.  I wonder sometimes how long He will wait?  When I do finally open the door, I sometimes wonder how long He’s been standing there knocking?  When I hear His voice, it sometimes occurs to me that He has been speaking a long time, and I just haven’t been listening.

This verse comes at the end of a convicting passage from Revelation:

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. – Revelation 3:15-16

Jesus, I am sorry about my distracted, unbelieving and uncaring attitude that I often have toward You.  I do not want to be lukewarm.  Help me to hear Your voice and open the door when you knock!
