Praying at Bob Evans

Reading 17 in the Outflow book ended with a story of Dave and his wife praying for people after Hurricane Katrina.  This example showed people’s willingness to ask for prayer in the midst of overwhelming circumstances.  But are people in everyday life that willing for you pray for them?  I believe they are.

I meet a friend of mine every Tuesday morning at the Bob Evans in Delaware.  We always meet on Tuesday and always sit at a table with the same waitress: Bev.  After a few months of meeting, we got to know Bev a little bit between ordering oatmeal, coffee and pancakes.  We found out about her husband, her kids and her grandkids.

Then one morning, we said something like, “Bev, we are just getting ready to pray.  Is there any way we can pray for you today?”.  We weren’t sure what she would say, but sure enough, she asked if we could pray for her husband, who had been home on disability for some time.  We did pray for him, and have asked about him each week since.

Has there been a huge breakthrough with Bev?  Not that I know of…but I do believe we have opened a door for more dialog with her.  We’ll keep meeting there, and we’ll keep listening to see what else Bev might need prayer for.

You never know how God might make a difference over coffee and oatmeal at Bob Evans!
