Most water parks have one of those huge buckets that slowly fill with water until they tip over and release a flood of water on everyone standing underneath them. If you’ve been to one of those parks, you may had a variety of responses to this whole deal:
- You may have stayed at the edge of the pool because you weren’t quite sure what to expect. You thought you’d just wait and see if everyone else looked like they were having fun getting drenched.
- You may have stayed at the edge of the pool, not really sure if you actually want to be drenched by all that water.
- You might have headed over to the bucket, only to arrive too late…and you miss the excitement!
- You might even have made it to the bucket at the right time, but been standing in the wrong spot. When the water did come, it really didn’t drench you like you were hoping.
Sometimes we are unsure, unwilling, too late, or in the wrong place. I think those same things happen in our walk with God.
I found myself in Psalm 42 this morning, where David laments the “good old days”, and writes his honest feelings of discouragement and sadness. But toward the end of the Psalm, he recognizes his folly and remembers God.
But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. Psalm 42:8 (NLT)
Like that huge bucket of water, God’s love is ready to pour out on us every day. Unlike the bucket of water, God’s supply of love never ends…but we can miss it. We can miss it because we are a little unsure of what to expect. We can miss it because we honestly prefer the calm waters at the edge of life. We can miss it because we wait too long to walk toward God, or because we aren’t really standing next to Him at all.
We can miss it.
My prayer for myself this morning is that I wouldn’t miss God’s unfailing flood of love that He is ready to pour out on me. I have tasted that love. I have tasted the presence of God and know the feeling of following Him in His timing and with His power. I know the glory it brings Him and the joy it brings me. I love it. I don’t want to miss it out of timidity, laziness, ignorance or sin.
That is my prayer for all of us today. Don’t miss it.
Thank you Tom for the reminder that we can choose to be involved in God’s plan wholeheartedly or not. I pray too that we do’t miss it!
