Psalm 48 paints a picture of God that I do not automatically have in my head. It is a picture the Psalmist instructs us to describe to those that come after us.
Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. Psalm 48:12-14 (NLT)
A citadel is defined as “a fortress in a commanding position in a city”. That is how God is described here. He is place of shelter. He provides a defensive position for the purpose of commanding an offense. He is strong, tall, mighty. He is our God!
This God, who has now done such great things for us, is unchangeable in his love to us, and his care for us. If he is our God, he will lead and keep us even to the last. He will so guide us, as to set us above the reach of death, so that it shall not do us any real hurt. He will lead us to a life in which there shall be no more death. Matthew Henry, Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.
Can you describe the indescribable? Psalm 48 says we should try!
