Do you ever lament that no one calls you to do things? Do you ever wish more people would invite your family over for dinner? Do you ever get irritated that you are always the one initiating with others?
How do you think God feels? It is pretty easy to get so self-centered that I wonder why God isn’t initiating with me. Why isn’t He pursuing me like He does other people? Why doesn’t He pursue me like He used to?
Isn’t it more likely that I’m the one that stopped pursuing Him? When David was stuck in the wilderness, he must have been tempted to think God had abandoned him, but this is part of what he wrote:
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1 (NLT)
We must never stop pursuing God. We must earnestly search for Him. We must pursue Him like we would pursue an oasis in the middle of the desert. We sometimes live in a parched and weary land. God is that oasis. He is that clean and refreshing water that will truly quench our thirst. He has promised that those who earnestly seek Him will find Him.
Make Psalm 63:1 your prayer today…that you would pursue your God!

While it is true that we should never stop pursuing Him, we should likewise take solace in the fact that He never stops pursuing us. The great poem “The Hound of Heaven” by Francis Thompson best describes this nature of our God. The poem itself has had a profound impact on countless Christians including JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis as they found truth in the words that you can never hide from God for He pursues us neverendingly. – Gary Alexander
