The message this Sunday is a reminder that love is not self-seeking. I am selfish to the very core of my being. So are you. Yes you are. Yes you are. Trust me, you are. It is part of the now-natural tendency of the human race. Too often, what we say or do serves to benefit us, even when it is wrapped in flowery language and beneficial actions.
Even our prayers can often be self-serving. How often do we use the words ‘me’, ‘I’, ‘mine’, ‘my’, ‘we’, ‘our’, etc. when praying to God? In contrast, check out his prayer found in Psalm 79. The words ‘us’ and ‘our’ are in there, but…
Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name. Psalm 79:9 (NLT)
Why is the Psalmist asking for help? So that the name of God would be glorified and honored. Can I say the same? Too often the answer is no.
