The Pursuit of God: The Speaking Voice

God is Still Speaking

There was a time when God spoke out loud to people.  There was a time when He poured forth speech as clearly as you or I.  There was a time when His instructions to man were clear and unmistakable.  There was a time when people could know the desires of His heart and interact with Him.

That is right now.  Tozer reminds the reader in chapter 6 of The Pursuit of God that God is still speaking.  He is not silent.  The problem is, we do not expect Him to speak, and so we do not listen for Him.  According to Scripture, all of creation speaks to us of the creator.  It the Bible however, that is His primary tool of communication to us today.  It is not just a book.  It is the natural, inevitable, revelation of the Word of God.  As Tozer puts it:

The Bible will never be a living Book to us until we are convinced that God is articulate in His universe.  The Bible is the inevitable outcome of God’s continuous speech.  It is the infallible declaration of His mind for us put into our familiar human words.

He goes on to say that:

…a new world will arise out of the religious mists when we approach our Bible with the idea that it is not only a book which was once spoken, but a book which is now speaking.

A hearty, softly spoken ‘amen’ to that.  The Bible truly is the Word of God.  It is alive and active.  The Bible will speak to us, but only if we regularly approach it with great expectation.

I commend it to you.  If  you aren’t quite sure how to start, I’d encourage you to take one of our upcoming Grace Point University classes or check out some of my prior posts on having a quiet time.
