The Eye

The eye is an amazing part of God’s creation.  The sheer number of mechanisms that must work correctly for us to see is mind boggling.  Our eyes allow us to enjoy the beautiful world and people around us.  Our eyes allow us to read God’s Word.  Our eyes allow us to see danger coming and avoid it.  Without our eyes, life would be far less 3-dimensional…in fact it wouldn’t be 3-dimensional at all!  After getting hit directly in the eye with a nerf dart recently, I have a better appreciation for this verse from Proverbs:

Ears to hear and eyes to see— both are gifts from the Lord. Proverbs 20:12 (NLT)

The eye is referred to in Scripture a lot…107 times in the New Testament alone.  Here is one we have read many times.  But again, a nerf dart in the eye has given me a new appreciation for it.

“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

Log in eyeHow many times do I concern myself with an issue that my family member or friend has while completely ignoring my own issue?  It is human nature to point out the faults of those around us, but if we ask Him to, the Holy Spirit will point out the things in us that He wants to change.

So here is a challenge for this week of thanksgiving.  See how long you can go without pointing out anyone else’s faults.  Better yet, instead of pointing out their faults, take a moment to tell them point out something positive you see in them.
