Michele and I went to see “The Blind Side” over the break. It was the first movie I’ve seen in a long time that was actually worth the money we paid! Though I suppose it was technically a football movie, to me it was more about showing the love of Christ to someone who needed it…or perhaps being the love of Christ to someone who needed it. The main character in the movie comforted a young man in a way that no one else could (or would) do.
He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:4 (NLT)
This verse sums up a lot of what our Christian walk is to be all about. This life includes troubles. For some, the troubles seem minor and for others they may be major. Regardless of the intensity of the troubles, God comforts us as we walk through them. He does so because it is His nature to do so. But He also does it so that we can in turn comfort others who need it.
Imagine a world where Christians lived out this verse. A world where we thought more about how we could comfort the people around us and less about how we need comforted. A world where we remembered the comfort God has provided us enough to show that same comfort to others. A world where we looked for people in need of comfort and we inconvenienced ourselves enough to provide it.
Let me suggest two takeaways from this one verse:
- Who has God used to comfort you in the recent past and how can you thank them?
- Who has God put in your path that needs comforted, and how can you comfort them?
